North Korean Freedom Association representative Susan Scholti claimed on the 2nd (local time) that two women out of five North Korean defectors arrested by the Chinese police last year were handed over to human traffickers. He also criticized President Moon Jae-in for responding passively to the North Korean defector issue.
CEO Scholti argued that the Chinese police handed over two North Korean refugee women to Chinese traffickers on the grounds that the prisons were crowded through the Free Asia Broadcasting (RFA) of the United States.
According to the RFA, these North Koreans fled North Korea to go to South Korea and left Shenyang, China on September 12 last year, but were arrested the following day in Huangdao, China. Afterwards, he was detained at a police station in Qingdao. There are five of them, a 49-year-old female and a 48-year-old male, a pregnant woman, and an unidentified adult female, respectively. However, CEO Scholti did not reveal who specifically was handed over to a Chinese trafficker.
The remaining three are known to be in custody, but are Christians and are likely to be executed if repatriated to North Korea.
In addition, CEO Scholti pointed out that President Moon was passive in stopping the repatriation of North Korean defectors. “After the administration of former President Richard Nixon of the United States, a letter signed by 24 former government officials representing all the US administrations was sent to President Moon Jae-in, but President Moon did nothing (to the North Korean defectors group). “It was a tremendous opportunity to rescue this party in danger,” he said.
Former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, Roberta Cohen, who signed the letter, also told RFA that he has urged President Moon to engage with the Chinese government for North Koreans detained in China.
