Samsung Heavy Industries won orders for 20 super-sized container ships, setting a record for the shipbuilding industry in a single ship construction contract.
On the 26th, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had won an order for 20 15,000 TEU-class container ships for a total of 2.8 trillion won through a contract with a shipowner in Panama. This is 38.2% of the recent sales of 7.349.7 billion won.
Samsung Heavy Industries previously won orders for a total of 42 vessels, including three Suezmax-class crude oil carriers, and $5.1 billion (about 5.7 trillion won), reaching 65%, more than half of this year’s target of $7.8 billion.
According to Clarkson Research, the UK’s shipbuilding and offshore market analysis agency, Samsung Heavy Industries won 34 orders out of a total of 66 large container ships of 12,000 TEU or higher (Neo-Panamax class) ordered worldwide this year, and ranked first in market share did.
