’52 hours a week, reinforcement of accident and environmental regulations, frequent strikes, abnormal cold waves, noise-related complaints… ‘
The number of variables that domestic construction companies have to deal with at the construction site is gradually increasing, and they are suffering from headaches. However, it is impossible to wait for the environment to change. Sampyo Group, a leading company in basic construction materials, has been receiving great response from construction companies by releasing new special concrete products that overcome these barriers with technology. By changing only the concrete, the construction period was shortened, construction was possible even in sub-zero weather, and construction noise and human accidents were greatly reduced. Sampyo’s special concrete products have recently been put into construction sites such as Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant, Hyundai E&C, and Daewoo E&C, and sales surged 2.5 times from the previous year. Sales increased even in a strike due to various regulations, union conflicts, and abnormal climates. As the downstream construction industry subsides, the nationwide ready-mixed concrete shipments have been on a downhill road since 2017. Lee Seok-hong, vice president of Sampyo Industries, said, “This year’s sales target is three times that of last year.”
Asia’s best’freeze ready-mixed concrete’ technology … The pouring period is also shortened to one-third.
As the 52-hour weekly work system has been expanded to companies with 50 or more employees this year, most construction sites are fighting against time to avoid delays due to reduced working hours. Sampyo threw the number of matches with’quick-hardening concrete’. In the normal frame construction process, after reinforcing bars are placed and the formwork is installed, the concrete (remicon) in an unhardened state is poured into the concrete. The ready-mixed concrete is hardened into concrete through a’curing’ process that gradually increases its strength while generating heat. Normally, general ready-mixed concrete requires a curing period of 2 to 3 days, but Sampyo’s special concrete’Blue Corn Speed’ hardens in 18 hours. According to Sampyo, it usually takes 8 to 9 days to complete the frame construction of one floor of an apartment using ordinary concrete. However, with this product, it takes only 1 to 2 days and is reduced to a third level. This product, developed by Sampyo in 2018 and commercialized for the first time in Korea in 2019, was supplied to construction sites of large construction companies such as Hyundai E&C, Daewoo E&C, and POSCO E&C last year, and sales volume doubled from the previous year.
In normal sub-zero weather, ready-mixed concrete is not hardened and the moisture inside is frozen, making it impossible to pour ready-mixed concrete. However, if the temperature of ready-mixed concrete is artificially increased by burning lignite, it is possible to work on the site, but workers suffocating accidents and air pollution problems due to burning lignite remain. However, even last winter, which recorded a’record cold wave’, Sampyo’s special concrete was sold as if it were a wing at the construction site. This is because construction could continue without interruption thanks to’Blue Corn Winter’, which does not freeze even in -10 degrees Celsius. Last year’s sales volume was 2.5 times that of the previous year. As a result, construction companies say that the process speed has improved by about 20-30% compared to the previous year, and that they were able to save tens of thousands of won in cost when building an apartment. This product is the only ready-mixed concrete in Korea that can be used on construction sites even in sub-zero weather. In terms of related technology, three Pyo said that it is the best in Asia. Vice President Lee said, “Last winter, there was too much demand in the market, so there was insufficient sales force to respond to it.” “Introduced.

Another risk of urban construction sites is complaints about noise from neighboring residential areas. Most of the complaints are caused by vibrators that make a loud noise (90㏈) when pouring ready-mixed concrete. The vibrator is a device that presses and fills the concrete so that no air bubbles remain due to the internal concrete structure when the ready-mixed concrete is poured. However, Sampyo’s’Blue Corn Self’ is a special concrete that does not require a vibrator, reducing the noise on site by about 20%. This is because this product has high fluidity and fills the space by itself, even between the dense reinforcing bars at 3 cm intervals that ordinary ready-mixed concrete cannot enter. Therefore, the more complex and precise structures are used, the higher the utilization. When placing ready-mixed concrete, there is no need for compacting, so labor costs can be saved.
It is known that a considerable amount of this product was supplied to Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant. Sampyo owns five patented technologies related to special concrete, such as Bluecorn Speed, Winter, and Self. All of them are the first products that Sampyo commercialized last year. In addition, the special concrete’Blue Corn Floor’, which solved the problem of frequent cracking in the floor of the apartment underground parking lot, was also popular. According to Sampyo, sales volume exceeded 10 times the previous year as demand from large construction companies building luxury apartments increased due to frequent complaints from apartment residents.
Sampyo’s development of special concrete is because the construction industry is declining, and the factors that deteriorate profitability are increasing, such as an increase in transportation costs due to a strike by truck owners and the expansion of the 52-hour working week system. Jeong Do-won, chairman of Sampyo Group, has invested 40 billion won over the past five years to develop special concrete technology, preparing for losses in order to overcome such difficulties. It was also the decision of Chairman Chung to hire Vice President Lee, who was formerly the Chief Technology Officer of Hyundai E&C, in 2019. The price of the four special concrete types sold by Sampyo is 1.3 to 1.5 times higher than that of general products, but sales are rising rapidly, emerging as a new growth engine. Vice President Lee said, “This year’s estimated sales for special concrete will be around tens of billions of billion won, but in the long run, we plan to raise it to 10-20% of Sampyo Group’s annual sales (3 trillion won).”

The future technology that Sampyo is currently devoting to development is ultra-high strength concrete (UHPC), which has tens of higher strength than ordinary concrete. Vice-president Lee explained, “The strength that even bunker buster missiles cannot penetrate (150 ㎫)” and “As a result, it is a technology that saves the environment because it is not necessary to make the walls thick to achieve high strength.”
