This year, among the confirmed cases of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in Korea, 3,800 people under the age of 18 were counted as 10.7% of the total confirmed cases (35,263).

According to the Central Defense Countermeasure Headquarters (Bangdaebon) on the 23rd, out of the 3,5679 confirmed cases of Corona 19 in Korea since January this year, 3,830 people aged 3-18 are in the school age range. Among them, 1299 (33.9%) were 7-12 years old, and the lowest was 783 (20.4%) 3-6 years old.

Dae-bon Bang asked for quarantine measures, such as prevention of infection in educational facilities, that there were cases of group infection mainly in daycare centers and academies. Of the school-age confirmed patients this year, 438 were confirmed through daycare centers (28 cases) and 323 confirmed through academies (21 cases).

In the case of daycare infection, it was found that after the daycare center users and workers were confirmed with Corona 19, it was further spread to workplaces, academies, and other daycare centers in the local community through their families and colleagues. In high schools, group infections occurred through group dormitory life, inadequate compliance with individual quarantine rules, and shared meals. There have been no cases of group infection in elementary school since the start of school.

Dae-bon Bang asked health managers at daycare centers, kindergartens, and schools to “if students with suspicious symptoms such as fever, body aches, and respiratory symptoms, take home measures and periodically ventilate the room.” In addition, students and parents were asked to “if you have any suspicious symptoms before school, get tested immediately, wear a proper mask, practice distance, and refrain from talking with others when using indoor multi-use facilities.”

Lee Sang-won, director of epidemiological investigation and analysis, said at a regular briefing on the day, “Even if we take into account the proportion of the population, there were far more cases that parents spread to their children than in the opposite case.” Please follow the quarantine rules thoroughly, such as washing your hands,” he said.
