It was found that the dependency of’Internet Explorer’ on domestic websites is still severe.

On the 13th, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced the results of the ‘2013 Web Compatibility Survey’, which surveyed the status of multi-browser support and ActiveX use targeting 100 domestic and international private sites.

The survey targets were selected as one of the top 100 private websites in Korea (accounting for 73.5% of the domestic Internet usage) and the top 100 overseas sites, based on the percentage of use by 10 categories to secure representativeness and diversity.

As a result of this web compatibility survey conducted from October to December last year, among the top 100 sites in Korea, the number of sites using ActiveX was found to be 75, down 5 from 80 in 2012. The number of domestic multi-browser support sites that support three or more browsers also increased by five from the previous year from 17 in 2012 to 22 last year.

However, 91 out of 100 overseas sites support 3 or more browsers, so the dependency on Internet Explorer is still quite severe.

The number of domestic sites that use ActiveX is also gradually decreasing, but compared to overseas sites, the use rate of ActiveX is still high. Overseas, only 35 out of 100 sites use ActiveX.

By function, ActiveX, which is used for financial and payment-related functions such as security (27.4%), authentication (18.8%), and payment (15.1%), accounted for about 61%.

Based on the results of this survey, the Ministry of Future and Future plans to establish and implement measures to improve the Internet use environment.

Improvement measures include support for multi-browser conversion, preparation of web compatibility and openness guidelines, expansion of open banking and consulting on alternative technologies for ActiveX, establishment of an ActiveX-Free accredited certification base, and development of HTML5 common modules.
