As Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was handed over to trial in connection with the Samsung C&T merger allegations, recently undergone emergency surgery, the trial schedule is expected to be disrupted.
A condition that needs treatment for more than 1 week due to an appendix burst
The 83rd anniversary of the founding on the 22nd… There doesn’t seem to be a separate ceremony
According to business and legal affairs on the 21st, Vice-Chairman Lee, who is imprisoned in the Seoul detention center, complained of severe abdominal pain on the afternoon of the 19th, and medical staff of correctional authorities judged it as appendicitis and received treatment at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital in Pyeongchon, Gyeonggi-do, a designated hospital by the Ministry of Justice. However, at the time of arrival at the hospital, the appendix had already ruptured, and it was judged that there was a risk that the foreign body would spread to the peritoneum and was transferred to the Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Vice-Chairman Lee received emergency surgery for about an hour and is currently recovering in the same hospital. Like Vice Chairman Lee, if the appendix ruptures and surgery is performed, treatment is required for more than a week depending on the degree of intestinal infection.

As Vice Chairman Lee lies in bed, it is highly likely that the first trial of the Samsung C&T merger, which was scheduled to be held on the 25th, and Samsung Bilogics’ accounting corruption allegations will be delayed. Vice-Chairman Lee was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in jail in January at a repatriation trial for the destruction of the government’s Gukjeong Nongdan. In addition, a trial is in progress after being charged with violating the Capital Markets Act and the External Audit Act. Vice-Chairman Lee is obligated to appear as a defendant at a trial conducted by the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Agreement Part 25-2 (Deputy Judge Dr. Park Jeong-je and Kwon Seong-su).
Vice-Chairman Lee did not request the court to postpone the deadline or fail to attend the trial until the afternoon of that day. If Vice-Chairman Lee fails to appear, the court is expected to hold a trial with only 10 Samsung officials in the presence of the remaining charges or delay the trial date.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Samsung will have a quiet day without a separate event on the 22nd, celebrating its 83rd anniversary. Since Samsung disbanded the Future Strategy Office in 2017, it has not held a ceremony to commemorate the establishment of the group.
