According to the Norwegian Defense Services Agency on the 21st, the F-35A successfully tested the JSM in March at Edwards Air Force Base in California, USA.
The stealth design was applied to JSM. It also attaches to the F-35A’s internal armament spear and opens the armament spear door when shooting. Even if a stealth fighter is equipped with a bomb or missile on the wing or fuselage rather than the internal armament window, the possibility of radar detection increases. This makes it difficult for the enemy to detect even F-35 fighters and JSM missiles.
JSM is a multi-purpose cruise missile that precisely strikes a target on land or sea in land, sea, and air. It flies up to 500km or more. The range is reduced to more than 100 km if you fly as if passing through the ground or just above the surface of the water.

It was built on the basis of an anti-ship missile, the Maritime Strike Missile (NSM), made by Kongsberg, a Norwegian defense industry. The U.S. has been developing it since 2014 to install it on the F-35A for the air force and the F-35C for the navy among the F-35s in cooperation with Norway.
Ryu Seong-yeop, a research fellow at the 21st Century Military Research Institute, said, “The JSM is currently the only long-range strike missile that can be fired from stealth fighters.” Stealth fighters are tasked with operating even within the enemy’s air defense network. In the beginning, we didn’t consider long-range strike missiles because stealth performance was sufficient.

Commissioner Ryu Seong-yeop said, “As China and Russia intensively invested in stealth detection and air defense networks, the US also decided that long-range strike missiles for stealth fighters were needed.”
If the US deploys JSM in action, China and Russia are expected to suffer for the time being. This is because there is no point in time to prevent the’F-35+JSM’ combination.
