Local media including the Seattle Times reported on the 14th (local time) that protesters condemning hate crimes targeting Asians have gathered in Seattle, Washington, USA.
After the Corona 19 pandemic, violent crimes against Asians have emerged as a serious social problem in the United States.
The day before, hundreds of people gathered at Hinghei Park in Seattle’s Chinatown International District to condemn physical and verbal violence against Asian Americans.
Noriko Nasu, a Japanese-American teacher who was beaten for no reason at this place last month, also participated in the protests.
The address was addressed by former Washington Governor Gary Locke, the first Asian governor of the United States. He raised his voice, saying, “I condemn those who blame the virus on Asian origin. Hatred is a virus,” he raised his voice.
According to the Center for Hate and Extremeism in the United States, hate crimes in the United States fell by 7% last year, but crimes against Asians in 16 major cities in the United States increased by 149%.
Previously, protests were held in New York and Los Angeles (LA) to condemn hate crimes against Asians. New York Mayor Bill Double Lazio and Democratic Party Senator Chuck Schumer participated in the protests in New York on the 27th of last month, calling for attention.
As the situation got worse, the US Department of Justice issued a statement in Korean on the 5th and made a position that “Hate crimes are unacceptable.”
In the statement, Senior Deputy Assistant Attorney Pamela Callan said in the statement that “we will mobilize all the necessary resources to protect our neighbors and communities from terrible hate crimes.”
