‘AstraZeneca vaccination stopped in Austria’ misinformation poured out

Major domestic media outlets reported extensively that Austria had stopped vaccination against AstraZeneca, but this was different from the’fact’.

In Austria, after vaccination of AstraZeneca, one 49-year-old woman died of a blood clotting disorder, and a 35-year-old woman was treated for pulmonary embolism.

“Austria stops AZ vaccine vaccination… Investigation of the cause of death” (News 1) “Austria ceases use of the dead after AZ vaccine vaccination (Korea Economic Daily)” “Let the dead come out… Austria has stopped AZ vaccine” (Seoul Newspaper) “Austria stops AZ corona vaccine vaccination in case of death” (Financial News).

Reports criticized the government, citing Austria’s response. New Daily said on the 9th, “In the case of Austria, it was decided that the cause of the death occurred and it was not found, but the AZ vaccination was stopped. However, the Korean government continues to review the risk of vaccination, but does not stop vaccination.” On the 8th, the Munhwa Ilbo also said, “Going back and forth for the government’s first inoculation… “(Austria) temporarily suspended AZ vaccination and started investigating the cause of death,” he compared with the Korean government.

However, this was not true. The original text of the Austrian Federal Health and Safety Administration (BASG) website says that the vaccine for AstraZeneca, named’ABV 5300′, will be discontinued. ‘Batch’ means’group’ on the surface, but it also means a product group with the same serial number made in one manufacturing process.’ Only a small number of vaccines with a specific serial code were stopped, but it was misreported as if all vaccines had stopped.

The remaining amount of vaccine with the serial number’ABV 5300′ is 6000 doses. One dose is the amount of one inoculation.

The original article of Reuters, which has been cited by many domestic media, also has the title “Austria suspends AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine batch after death”, and the expression’batch’ is revealed in the title.

As the controversy spread, the Korean Embassy in Austria announced on the 9th, “The Austrian Government Position on Death Accidents After Vaccination with AstraZeneca”, “Among the vaccines with the same serial number (ABV 5300) as the accident-related vaccines already distributed, they have not yet been vaccinated. 6,000 doses were immediately recovered and discontinued.” “We plan to decide on future actions based on the autopsy results of the deceased and whether the relationship with the AstraZeneca vaccine was confirmed, but currently, AstraZeneca vaccines other than the 6,000 recovered doses are still being vaccinated. ”

On the 11th, Yonhap News issued a’misinformation’ and did not correct it and’checked the fact’.

Yonhap News said at 2 pm on the 11th, “Austria has stopped vaccination against AZ coronavirus?” Referencing the misinformed articles through the’Fact Check’ article, he pointed out, “If you read these articles, it’s easy to understand that Austrian health authorities have completely stopped vaccination against AstraZeneca.”

Yonhap News said, “It is not true that Austria has completely stopped vaccination against AstraZeneca.” “Austria is still vaccinating the AstraZeneca vaccine. Situation”.

Yonhap News reported on the 8th, “Austria, AZ vaccine stopped..’For prevention after reporting the dead’”, citing foreign media and reported that it was “vaccinated”. Yonhap News reported that in an article sent just six hours before the’Fact Check’ article was published on the 11th, “the Austrian authorities stopped getting the AstraZeneca vaccine after the death of a nurse.”

The’public confidence’ of Yonhap News, a national key news agency, is great, and since there are many media companies that have signed a reprint contract, after the release of Yonhap News on the 8th, articles with the same contents as Yonhap News were continued in Seoul Economic Daily, SBS, and INews24.

On the 11th, there was also a misinformation stating that Austria was’disposing of’ the AstraZeneca vaccine. On the 11th, the Herald Economic Daily and the Kookmin Daily quoted foreign media, saying, “There will be no more distribution or inoculation by the people of the remaining quantity,” the Austrian health authorities said. However, this also applies only to vaccines with the corresponding serial number.

It is also worth pointing out that the media reports dealing with the Austrian case highlighted’accidents’ and’stop vaccinations’. For example, on the 8th, the Korean economy published an article titled “Austria discontinues use of AZ vaccine after death comes out” and wrote in the subtitle “There is no evidence that there is a causal relationship in death cases”. It was also a problem that the title was different from the facts, but it could incite confusion by not writing the important content of’causal relationship is not revealed’ in the title.

The accident was not confirmed to have a causal relationship with vaccination. The Austrian Federal Health and Safety Administration (BASG) said, “There is no evidence that there is a causal relationship with vaccination” from the time of its first stance on the 7th. The European Medicines Agency (EAM) also said, “There is currently no indication that vaccination caused this disease” as a result of a preliminary investigation.
