In the 10th cycle of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which killed nearly 20,000 people, mourners continued to visit the affected area.

The Japanese government has stressed that local revival is steadily taking place, but more than 40,000 residents are still living in refuge.

Correspondent Lee Kyung-ah reports from Tokyo.

A pine tree standing in the place where the tsunami swept away.

It is the only surviving 70,000 trees on the shores of Iwate and is called the “miracle pine tree”.

The mausoleum near the pine tree, which symbolizes the survivors of the earthquake, was followed by a procession of worship depicting those who left first.

[이와테현 생존자 : (10년 지났으니 이제 일단락 됐다고 말하지만) 나에게는 행방불명된 가족 3명을 찾아야 끝나는 겁니다.]

[미야기현 생존자 : 살아있지 않았다면 몰랐을 즐거움 괴로움도 있지만… 내가 어떻게 살아있는 건지 지금도 모르겠습니다.]

The Japanese government plans to stop holding a memorial service hosted by the government at the end of this year, the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

At the memorial service, Prime Minister Suga comforted the victims and their bereaved, emphasizing that revival in the affected area is progressing steadily.

[스가 요시히데 / 일본 총리 : 지진 쓰나미 피해 지역에 걸쳐 생활의 재건, 부흥 마을 만들기가 대부분 완료되는 등 부흥의 총 마무리 단계에 들어가 있습니다.]

In the affected area, search operations are still ongoing to find 2,500 people who were missing at that time.

Most of the evacuation orders have been resolved, but more than 40,000 residents, such as the’Return Difficulty Zone’ where radioactive contamination is severe, are still living in evacuation nationwide.

[미나미소바시 피난 생활자 : 부흥이 외형적으로는 모습을 갖춰가고 있지만 내 마음 속에는 부흥이 아직 끝나지 않은 것 같고 아직도 회복해 가는 중이란 느낌이 듭니다.]

At the memorial service, Emperor Naruhito pointed out that there are still many tasks to be solved, such as damage to quality due to radioactive contamination.

Along with this, he said that he would approach the victims with his heart so that he would not be left behind and restore his peaceful daily life.
