USFK Commander Robert Abrams says North Korea continues to pose threats without any indication that it has ceased to develop nuclear capabilities.

He stressed that the deterrent efforts of the ROK-US alliance in response to this are a bastion for regional stability.

At a hearing in the US House of Representatives, Commander Abrams explained that there have been no intercontinental ballistic missiles or nuclear tests since 2017.

However, he stressed that the threat from North Korea continues amid the changing international security environment.

North Korea continues to develop nuclear and advanced missile systems, cyber capabilities, and other conventional and emerging asymmetric military technologies.

In particular, he pointed out that it introduced a new submarine-launched ballistic missile and a new solid-propelled ballistic missile during the feverish ceremony in January.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security, David Hellby, also confirmed this.

Commander Abrams said North Korea’s persistent investment in the development of new weapons underscores the importance of the ROK-US alliance.

He said that the ROK-US alliance has played a role in defending the Korean Peninsula, and that deterrence efforts are a bastion for regional stability.

In particular, the ROK-US allied forces emphasized that they are fully prepared to respond to any attack or crisis situation in North Korea.

However, he explained that coalition exercises have been coordinated over the past few years to provide room for diplomacy for North Korea’s denuclearization.
