KT announced on the 10th that it has developed a technology that can implement quantum cryptographic eavesdropping prevention (secret) communication without using a dedicated terminal.

In the past, a dedicated terminal, a secret weapon, has been used for secret communication. It is mainly used in national defense and national intelligence agencies, where security is the key.

By applying the quantum encryption technology developed by KT this time, secret communication is possible with only a general smartphone. Therefore, even private companies can easily build a quantum cryptographic secret communication system for security enhancement. For example, it is possible to keep the confidentiality of the conversation between a client and a lawyer in a legal case. It also reduces the likelihood of company secrets being leaked from outside the office when working remotely.

In secret communication, if you connect the’two-way secure communication terminal’ to each of the receiver’s and sender’s smartphones, the security mode is activated and the call contents are encrypted. The encrypted content of the call is decrypted with the’quantum encryption key’ synchronized in the secure mode.

KT reinforced security with a technology that combines a’quantum random number generator’ and a’quantum key distribution system’. Previously, it was encrypted with a single quantum random number generator, but the level of information security was further increased by applying a quantum key distribution system. It is impossible to decrypt without a quantum encryption key.

KT co-developed this quantum cryptography secret communication technology with domestic security startup IEL. YL has the original technology of developing a micro-quantum encryption chip selected as the core technology of the US Air Force security system.

The development of this technology is significant in that it is a result of KT’s implementation of the quantum cryptography technology established as an international standard for ITU-T as a commercially available technology, and creating a consortium that promotes technological cooperation and win-win development with SMEs.

Lee Jong-sik, head of the KT Infrastructure Research Institute, said, “We developed a highly secure quantum cryptographic secret communication service by combining the technologies of EL and KT. KT is a research to contribute to the establishment of the domestic quantum cryptography industry ecosystem and lead the innovation into a digital platform company. I will continue development.”
