Hyundai Motor Company has decided not to discontinue the Kona Electric electric vehicle.

Looking at the production status of Hyundai Motor Company in March, the number of Kona electric vehicles scheduled for this month is 250. It is reported that the current Kona electric vehicle inventory is at the level of 260 units.

It has been predicted that Kona electric vehicles could cease domestic sales due to recent fire and brake-related issues. In addition, although the partially modified Kona electric car has been disclosed in Europe and North America, speculation has been raised that it may undergo discontinuation procedures as it has not yet been released in Korea.

Hyundai Motor Company plans to continue producing Kona electric cars despite such speculation.

It was confirmed that Hyundai Motor Company and Kia received recertification of the Kona electric car and the Niro electric car earlier this month.

According to the Ministry of Environment’s Vehicle Emissions and Noise Certification System (KENCIS), on the 2nd, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia received certifications to change battery separator manufacturers related to Kona and Niro electric vehicles, respectively. The specific reason is unknown.

As the two companies are recertified, it is expected that the manufacturing and sales of Kia Niro electric vehicles as well as Kona electric vehicles will continue this year.

The battery separator problem is known to be one of the main causes of the Kona electric vehicle fire. This is because the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport mentioned it as a separator problem based on the recall plan submitted by Hyundai Motor Company last year. This cause analysis was controversial as the opinions of LG Energy Solutions were not reflected.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced in a press release on the 24th of last month that a separate fire did not occur as a result of repeated charging and discharging more than 369 times targeting battery cells with damaged separators.
