SK Inno,’SOS’ at the White House… Unfinished Battery Dispute

[앵커]

SK created a variable in the battery dispute that we thought was over.

He asked President Biden to make a decision, saying that he could give up the battery factory he had built in Georgia, USA.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s nominee has also made a remark on this and the results are noteworthy.

After the final ruling of the US International Trade Commission and ITC that SK Innovation violated the trade secrets of LG Energy Solutions, the two companies negotiated the size of the settlement amount.

But I couldn’t find any consensus.

“SK Innovation wants President Biden to overturn ITC’s decision,” reported the Wall Street Journal, a US economic journal.

In fact, SK sent a written opinion to the US White House’s direct trade representative asking President Biden to exercise his veto.

The ITC decision takes effect only when the president of the United States does not exercise his veto power, and SK expects the president to exercise his veto rather than an agreement.

If ITC’s decision is upheld, in fact, SK will be unable to make batteries in the United States for 10 years.

This is the background that SK gave up, saying that SK could give up the battery plant that is being built in Georgia by spending 3 trillion won.

On the other hand, LG issued an opinion that the ITC’s decision should not be overturned.

If SK abandons its plant construction, it could create local jobs as well as create problems with battery supply, which is the core of US eco-friendly car policy.

However, there is no precedent for the President to veto a ruling on trade secret infringement so far, so it is noteworthy what decision will be made.

“In fact, the situation is completely unpredictable now, and there is also the possibility of taking special measures to capture both SK and LG…”

The Biden administration’s nominee for the Minister of Transportation’s appointment has also said it will review how the ITC’s decision will affect government policy.
