The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled for July-September this year are expected to be held without foreign audiences.

On the 4th, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the government, the organizing committee, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have stepped in to not accept general audiences from abroad. It is judged that allowing large foreign spectators to enter the country as the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) continues, can lead to public unrest.

Previously, the Japanese government and the organizing committee, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) held a five-party video conference the day before and decided whether to accept overseas spectators during this month. It is expected that a decision will be made before the start of the Olympic torch relay on the 25th. An executive of the organizing committee told Yomiuri that “if Japan decides to give up attracting foreign spectators, the IOC and IPC will also respect it.”

The Mainichi Newspaper also reported on the day that the government is tuning in a direction not to receive foreign audiences, and said a remark from a government official saying, “It is impossible to attract foreign audiences at this point. The Asahi Shimbun also reported that there is a growing opinion that it is difficult to accommodate overseas audiences when looking at the situation of Corona 19 among officials. However, according to Kyodo News, Japanese domestic spectators will be allowed to enter the stadium. The upper limit of the number of stadium audiences is scheduled to be set in April.
