‘Future Car-Semiconductor Solidarity and Cooperation Council’ launched… Discovery of cooperation models

Future car-semiconductor demand-supply companies, seeking cooperation plans for vehicle semiconductors

[에너지데일리 최일관 기자] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Sung Yun-mo) held a ceremony for the inauguration of the’Future Car-Semiconductor Solidarity and Cooperation Council’ on the 4th, and discussed plans for cooperation between domestic automobile-semiconductor companies.

The council was set up to seek measures related to the unstable supply and demand of global automotive semiconductors, and to discuss mid- to long-term cooperation measures to preoccupy the future vehicle and semiconductor market and stabilize the domestic supply chain.

The domestic automobile and semiconductor industries each have the world’s best capabilities, but they still lack capabilities related to automotive semiconductors, which are the core areas of future mobility.

Therefore, in order for the automobile-semiconductor industry to promote mid- to long-term cooperation in the field of automotive semiconductors in the future, it is necessary to establish regular cooperation channels to discuss cooperation measures first.

Accordingly, the government plans to establish a’future car-semiconductor solidarity and cooperation consultative body’ together with the automobile-semiconductor industry, and in the short term, closely consult with the industry on a solution to the current supply and demand insecurity, while actively establishing and promoting mid- to long-term plans.

According to this, in response to the request of the domestic automobile industry as a short-term measure, we are closely discussing with the international community to improve the semiconductor supply and demand situation.

To prevent disruption in automobile production, we have been supporting rapid customs clearance for automotive semiconductor parts from February 17th.

In addition, due to the characteristics of the automobile industry that requires high reliability and safety, thorough performance verification for vehicle semiconductors is required, so we urgently support the performance evaluation of existing/new semiconductors by domestic fabless companies, module/parts companies, and finished vehicle companies.

Due to the characteristics of the automotive semiconductor industry, long-term close cooperation between supply and demand companies is required, so we plan to establish and operate a’future car-semiconductor alliance and cooperation council’.

The consultative body consisted of demanding companies (finished car companies, module/parts companies), supplier companies (fabless, foundries, general semiconductor companies), and secretaries (automobile research institute, automobile industry association, semiconductor industry association).

The government will also discover and support a cooperative model that links automobile companies and semiconductor companies (foundry, fabless, etc.) with a mid- to long-term plan.

In order to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic vehicle semiconductor supply chain (value chain), it plans to strengthen support for technology development, performance and certification, and promote the establishment of related infrastructure.

We actively support the self-sufficiency of semiconductors and parts for vehicles through related R&D, such as the next generation intelligent semiconductor technology development business and autonomous driving technology development innovation business.

In order to reinforce the performance evaluation and commercialization support for vehicle semiconductors so that the R&D results can reach final mass production, the establishment of a new dedicated business that reflects the specificity of vehicle semiconductors will be promoted from ’22.

In addition, in order to alleviate the burden of time and cost required for vehicle semiconductor certification, functional safety test and evaluation and reliability certification facilities and equipment will be built.

“This global automotive semiconductor supply and demand uncertainty is due to the global semiconductor supply and demand mismatch, and it is difficult to fundamentally solve it in a short period of time,” said Kang Kyung-sung, head of the industrial policy division of the Ministry of Industry, who presided over the meeting. For the sake of this, we will use this crisis as an opportunity to increase future car-semiconductor competitiveness.”

The government will actively review industry opinions from the council on that day, prepare concrete measures, and announce them soon after consultation with relevant ministries.
