The U.S. police secured the black box of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that he drove at the time of Tiger Woods’ car overturning accident. Through this, attention is paid to whether the cause of the accident will be identified.
According to the Associated Press, the office of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office in the United States is looking at the data on the black box mounted on the Genesis SUV GV80, which had a rollover accident on the 3rd (local time). The Sheriff’s Office said that traffic accident investigators have issued a search warrant for the GV80 black box to determine driving information and driving records at the time of Woods’ rollover accident. Deputy Sheriff John Slogle explained, “In the event of a traffic accident, a black box search warrant is issued to check the contents.”
Woods suffered a car rollover accident on the downhill curve of Los Angeles County on the 23rd of last month. Because of this, he injured his leg severely and received emergency surgery. Just before the accident, Woods visited Los Angeles as the organizer of the Genesis Invitational Tournament of the United States Professional Golf (PGA), sponsored by Hyundai Motor Company. The GV80 was provided by Hyundai Motor Company for use during his stay in Los Angeles.
During the initial investigation, the police said that they would not prosecute a criminal, as there was no evidence that Woods was drinking or taking drugs at the time of the accident. However, it seems that speeding may have been one of the causes of the accident, and it seems that it has started to secure black box data. Deputy Sheriff Slogle said, “If there was reckless driving due to the use of mobile phones, etc., we must reconstruct the situation at the time of the accident.”
Recently, some foreign media, such as USA Today and Fox News, reported that Woods may have fallen asleep at the time of the accident, based on opinions of vehicle forensics experts. It is hypothesized that the speed could not be reduced in time due to drowsy driving in the downhill curve section, and eventually suffered a rollover accident that rolled over the median strip.
Black box refers to a metal box containing an aircraft flight recorder. In the US automobile industry, a device that stores driving information in case of a car accident (Event Data Recorder, EDR) is also called a black box. Car black boxes are usually attached to the center of the dashboard or under the seat. Police investigating a car accident can download this information. Installation of a car black box is not mandatory in the United States. However, when a black box is installed, it is stipulated that information such as the speed before collision, whether the accelerator pedal and brake are activated, and whether the seat belt is installed and the airbag is activated should be recorded.
Moreover, since the Woodsga-driven GV80 is a Hyundai Motor Company’s luxury brand, the Genesis model, more detailed information is expected to be recorded in the black box. The Associated Press reported that “the GV80 will be equipped with a new version of the black box. This black box has important data for the authorities to investigate.”
