[시사경제신문=이다인 기자] The 3rd Hydrogen Economy Committee was held at SK Incheon Petrochemical on the 2nd, presided over by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun, with SK Chairman Tae-won Choi and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun, a private member of the Hydrogen Economic Commission.

With this hydrogen economy committee as an opportunity, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun and SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won held a battery meeting last July, and this time formed a’hydrogen alliance’. As the two groups actively invest in the hydrogen business, which is the future growth engine, it is predicted that business synergy will occur and the construction of the hydrogen ecosystem will be accelerated.

Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun said at this meeting, “We will increase the number of hydrogen refueling stations, which are currently only 73, to 180 or more by the end of the year, but intensively expand them in the metropolitan area.”

SK Group and Hyundai Motor Group presented an opinion that “I agree that hydrogen is an essential element in achieving carbon neutrality for realizing a sustainable society” and said, “We are working on discovering various business models to expand the supply of hydrogen electric vehicles.”

In particular, expectations for the hydrogen business partnership between the two groups, which are reinforcing cooperation in the electric vehicle battery business, are also growing.

SK Group decided to gradually convert over 1,500 vehicles operating at the SK Group business sites into hydrogen electric vehicles produced by Hyundai Motor Company. Hyundai Motor Group provided hydrogen commercial vehicles such as hydrogen cargo trucks (2022) and hydrogen tractors (2024). We discussed ways to use this.

In addition, by the end of this year, a concrete cooperation plan to install a hydrogen charging station for commercial vehicles at SK Nae Truck House, a logistics service base in Incheon and Ulsan, and a hydrogen charging station and an electric vehicle rapid charger (200kW class) at SK gas stations nationwide. I am going to discuss.

The Hyundai Motor Group has been closely cooperating with SK Group in the eco-friendly car sector, including selecting SK Innovation as the primary battery supplier for Hyundai Motor Company and Kia’s electric vehicle platform E-GMP. The goal is to strengthen and open an era of decarbonization.

Chairman Eui-sun Eui said, “Hydrogen can be used not only as an energy source, but also as a storage medium for energy, so it will play the role of’energy currency’ in the carbon-neutral era.” He said, “We will build a healthy hydrogen ecosystem that is made up of and accelerate the realization of a hydrogen society through successful energy conversion.”

In addition, Chairman Tae-won Choi said, “SK has established the entire hydrogen value chain (value chain) from production, distribution, and consumption to hydrogen, and Hyundai Motor, which has hydrogen car manufacturing technology, supplies hydrogen cars in a timely manner. We expect the hydrogen economy to grow rapidly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman Choi announced a plan that SK Group will invest 18.5 trillion won over five years to build a domestic hydrogen ecosystem at the Hydrogen Economic Committee.

In addition, by 2025, it will operate 100 hydrogen charging stations nationwide to supply 80,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen per year, and build a 400 megawatt (MW) fuel cell power plant to supply 200,000 tons of hydrogen per year through a dedicated pipeline. Plan. To this end, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is also discussing cooperation measures such as building a liquefied hydrogen charging station and building a hydrogen experience center.

The two groups signed business agreements with Incheon City and Incheon Seo-gu Office to establish the foundation for hydrogen business, and also toured the planned hydrogen liquefaction plant sites and petrochemical plants in SK Incheon Petrochemical with the Hydrogen Economic Committee.
