An elderly couple in their 80s and 90s who donated 20 billion won for fruit business for 50 years receives the National Medal.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced on the 2nd that “a national recommendation award will be awarded to 46 people (teams), including comedian Jo Jung-hyun, who has been volunteering for decades despite being unwell.”

The National Recommendation Award is a system that the government rewards when people recommend hidden neighbors in the fields of volunteerism and donation, lifesaving, environmental protection, international relief, overcoming adversity, and social harmony. This year, the 10th anniversary, from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, the winners were selected through field research, screening by the National Recommendation Awards Review Committee, and online referendum.

The highest-grade medal, the National Medal, Camellia, was returned to the couple, Jong-bok Jeon (81) and Soon-bun Kim (73), who donated 3 billion won, which was collected by saving the sword, to the’Fool Sharing Welfare Foundation’ for neighbors in need.

Young-suk Kim (93) and Young-ae Yang (85), an elderly couple of fruit merchants who receive the National Medal of Merit, donated 20 billion won worth of parcels and buildings to Korea Central Academy, a school corporation that runs Korea University, and another 20 billion won worth of real estate. Kim Byeong-yang (84), a luxury repair craftsman who has donated 1.2 billion won for a shoe repair work in Myeong-dong, Seoul for over 50 years, also receives a national medal of honor. Although comedian Jo Jung-hyeon, 60, fell down due to a brain hemorrhage in 1999 and was diagnosed with a physical disability level 2, he was awarded the National Medal of Pomegranate Medal for 27 years of service and donation of 74 million won while attending the disaster site.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security gave a presidential citation to Geum-Hyeon Bu (94), who donated 100 million won of the total wealth accumulated while living as a haenyeo for 64 years to the university and sponsored scholarships to students in need for decades. It has been announced that the Prime Minister’s citation will be awarded to Gil-Hong Cho (67), who has provided a haircut service for students and the visually impaired.

Gu Gyo-don (23), a social service worker, who witnessed a fire in an 11-story residential-commercial building and immediately went inside the building to report the fire and evacuated more than 200 people, was selected as the Prime Minister’s citation.
