Hyundai Motor Company’s first dedicated electric car’Ioniq 5′(photo) set a record for the first day of the pre-contract. As the IONIC 5 received an explosive reaction, Hyundai Motor Company is considering increasing the production capacity of the Ulsan plant.
According to Hyundai Motor Company on the 26th, a total of 23,760 units were contracted on the 25th, when the pre-contract was started. Tesla, which is considered a’competitor’ in the electric car market, surpassed last year’s sales (11,844 units) in one day. It also surpassed 23,06 cars, the record for the most pre-contracts by Hyundai Motor Group, which was set up by the 4th generation carnival. It is explained that it recorded the highest number of pre-contracts ever among domestic finished vehicle models including internal combustion locomotives.
With more than 20,000 Ionic 5 reserved, the annual sales target is also expected to be achieved early. Hyundai Motor Company set the domestic sales target of 26,500 units this year when it first unveiled the Ioniq 5 on the 23rd. Only the number of contracts on the first day achieved about 90% of the annual target. A Hyundai Motor Company official said, “The record of the Ioniq 5 will be an important milestone in the popularization of electric vehicles this year.”
It has been well received overseas as well. Autocar, a British automobile magazine, said, “The parametric pixels of the headlights and taillights, which were not found in the existing Hyundai models, are very unique, and the clean straight line is attractive.” US online media Motor 1 analyzed that “the longer wheelbase (distance between axes) than the Palisade, which is a large sports utility vehicle (SUV), is impressive, and the front seats are tilted at an optimal angle, giving the occupants a feeling of weightlessness.” did.
Reasonable price is also evaluated as a factor in the initial box office success. The price of the Ioniq 5 long range model, which is subject to a pre-contract, is 52 million to 57.5 million won per trim (detailed model) (based on 3.5% individual consumption tax). Long-range exclusive models can be purchased for a minimum of 37 million won if the price of the long-range exclusive model includes a tax reduction of up to 3 million won and an electric vehicle subsidy of 12 million won (based on Seoul city). The popularity of the Ionic 5 could lead to the early exhaustion of the EV subsidy budget, which is also the background of pre-reservation.
As orders rush, Hyundai Motor Company is considering an increase in production. Initially, Hyundai Motor Company planned to produce about 72,000 Ionic 5 units at Ulsan Plant 1 this year. It is also discussing ways to change the second line of Ulsan Plant 1, which was intended to produce Kona EV and Ioniq 5 together, to a production line dedicated to Ioniq 5.
