The Gadeokdo New Airport Special Act, which was put forward at the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 26th, was passed with 181 votes in favor, 33 oppositions, and 15 abstentions out of 229 lawmakers Jaesuk. The bill, which came out of the Democratic Party’s debate in November last year, has been regarded as an’insurmountable bill’ within the party.

Ahead of this day’s plenary session, Democratic Party Representative Lee Nak-yeon from the morning caught the wind, saying, “Today we will pass a special law on Gadeokdo Island.” In fact, no Democratic Party member voted against the plenary session in the afternoon.
But even within the Democratic Party, there was a’little revolt’. Representatives Lee Won-young Yang and Mi-hyang Yoon threw a vote of abstention. I can’t say I was against the party argument, but I wasn’t in favor.
Regarding this, Congressman Yang said in a call with the JoongAng Ilbo on the 26th, “Because I entered the National Assembly on behalf of an environmental group, I could not help but worry about the environmental pollution problem caused by the construction of a new airport in Gadeok Island.”
Rep. Yang Yi, who was from the Environmental Movement Association, is currently regarded as a representative environmental activist in the National Assembly, serving as chairman of the Party’s special environmental committee. Rep. Yang-i said, “I understand the purpose of the new airport for Gadeokdo Island to revitalize the economy of Bu, Ul, and Gyeonggi, but for me, environmental concerns were also great. That’s why I threw a vote of abstention, not in favor or opposition.”

Rep. Yoon Mi-hyang, a member of the Environmental Labor Committee, also cast a vote of abstention. He was named as a co-sponsor at the time of the initiation of the Special Law on Gadukdo last year, so there is an atmosphere that unexpectedly accepts the vote of abstention. Representatives from Congressman Yoon said, “I had to listen a lot to the claims of environmental groups. He said that he had a lot of worries about the environment,” or “because he was sorry for not being able to communicate enough with the public in the process of the bill being promoted.”
On the other hand, in the power of the people, none of the 23 members of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK) district, which is a rival for the airport site, voted in favor. There were objections (17), absence (5), and abstention (1). In other regions, lawmakers Yu-dong, Yoon Hee-sook, and Ji Seong-ho voted against.
