Myanmar’s students and doctors appear to be planning a new massive protest against military rule.
According to the Reuters news agency on the 25th, the students plan to hold a rally in Yangon that day. The doctors will also join the protests on the same day as “part of the white gown revolution.”
In Myanmar, protests against the military dictatorship are taking place across the country after the military launched a coup about three weeks ago on the grounds that Aung San Suu Kyi’s Democratic Peoples Alliance (NLD) conducted a fraudulent election in November last year.
A human rights organization said that as of the 24th, a total of 728 people were arrested, prosecuted and sentenced by a court in connection with the protests.
Myanmar military commander Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, argued that the protests were suppressed in a democratic way and that the police were using minimal force, including rubber bullets. But so far, three protesters and one policeman have died.
