Despite the military’s warning of’forced suppression’, the largest anti-coup demonstration took place since the military coup on the 1st in major cities in Myanmar on the 22nd. The citizens of Myanmar have set the 22nd as the’general strike day’ and have announced the largest protests. The United States warned that it will respond firmly to the military’s violent measures. Foreign media such as the news agency reported that citizens flocked to the streets in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, and protested against the military coup. “We will fight until we win,” said Cow Cow, 23, a college student who participated in the protest. “I am afraid, but I will move forward. “We are really angry.”

In addition to Yangon, thousands to tens of thousands of citizens participated in the general strike protests in the capital Naepido and the second cities of Mandalay and Michina. Citizens wore clothes or hats for each participating unit and shouted against the coup and the release of national advisor Aung San Suu Kyi. On this day, restaurants and shops in Myanmar were closed, and foreigners KFC and delivery services were also closed. The citizens of Myanmar, who decided to hold the largest protest after the coup, posted photos of the protests in each city on their Facebook page to encourage participation in the protests. Last weekend, the’Civil Disobedience Movement’, which Myanmar citizens gathered, urged, through social media, to hold a general strike in which all industries participate in Myanmar on the 22nd. The local media reported that the protests will take place on’February 22, 2021′, and they are called ‘22222 protests’ with five numbers of 2 added. It is modeled after the so-called ‘8888’ protest that called for democratization on August 8, 1988.

Myanmar’s military sent a strong warning message saying, “We will counterattack” to the general strike by citizens. In a statement released the night before on the state-run military (MRTV) channel, the Supreme Military Administration, the National Administrative Council (SAC), said, “It was revealed that the protesters incited the riots and anarchy on February 22nd.” He argued, “We are inciting the people, especially teenagers and young people, who are prone to emotions, into a path of confrontation that fears human damage.” By using the expression’life damage’, he predicted a hard-line response. The night before, the military sent out a broadcast saying that trucks should not be used in downtown Yangon to participate in general strikes, and that more than five people should abide by the ban on assembly. Earlier on the 20th, Myanmar’s military fired at protesters in Mandalay and other places, killing two people, and entered into full-scale armed suppression. In downtown Yangon, where the largest protests are taking place, there is still no suppression of protests through shooting. US Secretary of State Tony Blingen on the night of the 21st (local time, on the morning of the 22nd Myanmar time) on his Twitter account, called “Resolute Action” against those who commit violence against the people of Myanmar in connection with the Myanmar military’s threats to suppress armed forces Said it would. He said that the Myanmar protesters “are demanding the reinstatement of the democratically elected government. We are in solidarity with the people of Burma (Myanmar).” Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar insisted that the international community expressed concerns about the coup as “obvious internal intervention”.
