The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced that it will complete eco-friendly buoy certification and unit price contracts for a total of 398 products, and will start a full-fledged support project to supply eco-friendly buoys in 2021.
Eco-friendly buoys are products with a significantly lower probability of generating microplastics than styrofoam buoys, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has been pursuing a business to replace styrofoam buoys used in farms with eco-friendly buoys since 2015.
Following 1.87 million last year, this year, 5.71 million, three times more than the budget increase, will be replaced with eco-friendly buoys. In addition, in order to promote the project quickly, it has completed the eco-friendly buoy certification and the unit price contract with Suhyup about two months ahead of the previous year.
Fisheries can select a product suitable for them from the eco-friendly buoys that have passed the durability and environmental hazard test standards and purchase them through the local cooperative, and receive support for 70% of the purchase cost (central government 35%, local government 35%).
In addition, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries plans to reinforce follow-up management, such as continuously managing the quality of eco-friendly buoys distributed to fishermen through market product surveys and factory inspections by preparing’Eco-friendly buoy follow-up management tips’.
In addition, in order to enhance the need for eco-friendly buoys and fishermen’s understanding of the products, we plan to produce and distribute promotional brochures including features and photos of eco-friendly buoys, and hold a briefing session for fishermen while observing the quarantine rules thoroughly.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is in consultation with the financial authorities to achieve the goal of “complete conversion to eco-friendly buoys by 2025,” while revising the law prohibiting the use of styrofoam buoys in farms within this year, and promoting the mandatory use of eco-friendly buoys step by step. I plan to do it.
Man-wook Heo, head of the aquaculture industry, said, “By improving the quality of eco-friendly buoys and strengthening support, we will achieve zero use of styrofoam buoys in farms by 2024, one year earlier than originally planned, and promote legislation prohibiting the use of styrofoam in the case of newly installed buoys. “He said.
