The Mars probe’Perseverance’ launched by the United States successfully landed on Mars, the New York Times and CNN reported as breaking news on the 18th (local time).

Named’patience’, Perseverance is NASA’s fifth Mars rover. The most demanding and dangerous flight to Mars, it safely passed through the process of entering, descending, and landing on Mars, which is called ‘7 minutes of horror’, and landed on Mars’ surface.

On this day, Perseverance settled in the’Jezero Crater’, which is believed to be the ancient delta of Mars. This is a surface that is believed to be the delta where the river flowed from 3 billion to 4 billion years ago, and it is expected that traces of microorganisms including organic molecules can be found.

First of all, Perseverance takes a picture of the landing area and sends a picture to Earth. For a month or so, it goes through the preparation process such as checking various devices and updating software. Afterwards, the Perseverance traveled 25 km for about two years and proceeded in earnest to find traces of ancient life.

In particular, it is an important task of Perservance to test the technology for the Mars manned exploration project in the 2030s. It is the first motorized flight to be performed on Mars. Perseverance carried a technology demonstration helicopter’Ingenuity’ on the ship. The helicopter comes off the rover after checking the equipment and prepares for a test flight.

Mars has an atmospheric density of only 1% of the Earth. Powered flight on Mars is as difficult as flying 100,000 feet above Earth. If the first power flight experiment on Mars is successfully carried out, a new origin of’Mars aerial exploration’ will open. This is because humans have been exploring Mars only with wheels and tracks.
