“The ugly appearance of Japan, which preoccupied the role and actions of its own country that caused World War II, is raising its head again in 2021. Harvard Professor Mark Ramsayer is using his thesis as a weapon to prick the eyes of Koreans.”
A Korean studies expert from Harvard University in the United States refuted the thesis of Professor Ramsey, who deprecated comfort women as’prostitutes’, saying, “I put salt on the wounds of Koreans again, while advocating the Japanese position.”
Mark Peterson, 76, an emeritus professor at Brigham Young University in the United States, who is regarded as a world-renowned expert in Korean studies, posted a column titled “Comfort Women, Japan, which stimulates Korea again,” on Koreanet, run by the Overseas Cultural Promotion Agency of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. He is a Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at Harvard University, has taught Korean history for over 30 years at Brigham Young University and retired in 2018.
In his column, Professor Peterson pointed out that he approached Ramsey’s thesis only legally without explaining how comfort women came about. He criticized Ramsey’s thesis as being limited to legal subjects that were difficult to understand that only lawyers could read. Ramsay is supporting Japan’s argument with the logic that it was a’contractual agreement’ without analyzing why and how the comfort women appeared.
“The author does not want to discuss the overall situation of the women’s exploitation crimes committed by Japan in the war.” “The cruel side of comfort stations taking for granted violently hitting comfort women for taking a break, for transferring sickness or becoming pregnant is “It’s difficult, it’s dangerous,” he said.
He says that in order to understand the comfort women issue, you need to know the Nanjing Massacre. Professor Peterson said, “After the battle in Nanjing, the Japanese military raped women and killed people, and strengthened the operation of comfort stations as a means to relieve the sexual desires of their own soldiers.” “Comfort women have fought another war to replace other crimes. Crime”.
He also pointed out the harm of the Ramsay paper. Professor Peterson said, “The implication of this thesis is to undermine the lives of comfort women victims of the few days and the honor of those who are already deceased, and to ignite distrust and hatred between Korea and Japan, which have deepened goals. Rather than making the two countries close, it ignited Korea’s long-standing antipathy, distrust, and hatred toward Japan.”
Regarding the behavior of the Japanese government, Professor Peterson said, “We have insisted on denying the comfort women issue, and every time the wounds are left and the label is removed before it heals,” he said. “Japan is far from the apology and sympathy that should be seen as a war criminal state. Criticized.”
He ended his post with the question, “When will Japan and everyone representing Japan stop justifying their country’s war crimes in the early 20th century and say’I’m sorry’.”
