[아시아경제 나한아 기자] The so-called’fake heiress’ who shook the social world in New York, USA, was released on parole on the 11th (local time), and her story is being bought by broadcasting and publishing companies.
According to the American Business Insider media, this year, 30-year-old Anna Sorokin recently sold her story to Netflix and received $320,000 (about 360 million won).
Sorokin will use the money he received from Netflix to pay $200,000 in damage compensation, $24,000 in fines (about 27 million won), and $75,000 in lawyer fees (about 85 million won), Insider said. It then agreed to pay 70,000 dollars (about 79 million won) in compensation to the bank that received additional loans.
However, the US New York Court will apply the “Sun of Sam” law against Sorokin to prevent profits. This is a law that prohibits criminals from gaining profits from the reputation gained by crime. Sorokin was the first to apply this law since 2001.
Sorokin’s acquaintance Williams also became a bestseller by writing a book called My Friend Anna: The Real Story of a Fake Heir. Since then, HBO, the representative cable pay-per-view channel in the United States, has also paid $335,000 (about 375 million won) to Williams each to produce “My Friend Anna” as a video.
Anna Sorokin, known as the reality version of Ripley, suddenly appeared in the New York social world in 2013, introducing herself as the heiress of a leading family with tens of billions of wealth. At that time, Sorokin enjoyed a luxury life by hanging out with people in New York’s fashion and art world under the pseudonym’Ana Delby’, buying luxury goods and going on luxury trips. Her daily life often appeared on social network services (SNS).
Sorokin planned to create a high-end restaurant and membership club with art exhibits by forging documents and lending more than $200,000 to banks. In addition, in order to maintain a luxurious life, the amount of fraudulent, such as owing to an acquaintance or having to pay for it, amounts to tens of thousands of dollars.
Sorokin’s double life, which lasted for four years, ended after his actual background and fraud were discovered, and in October 2017, he was arrested on charges of theft and fraud.
Sorokin was sentenced to jail in 2019. Then, last year, he suddenly changed his attitude to acknowledge his crime and regret it. According to local media such as the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Sorokin is expected to be deported to Germany after parole.
Meanwhile, Sorokin drew media attention during the trial process. Sorokin didn’t show any remorse while in court at the time, wearing luxury clothing chosen by a personal stylist. He drew public attention by claiming in a court statement, “The important thing is I’m not sorry. If I feel guilty, I lied to myself and everyone.”
