With a market share of 32%, it surpassed Samsung Electronics and ranked first. During the same period, shipments of Samsung Electronics fell 9%, recording a 27% market share.
Samsung Electronics also showed no advantage in the Asian market. Last year, Apple made progress in the Chinese market, the world’s largest smartphone market. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple increased its market share in the fourth quarter to 16% in China last year, up 5 percentage points from the previous year. During the same period, Huawei (-3%), Vivo (-22%), Oppo (-26%), and Xiaomi (-15%) recorded negative growth. Samsung Electronics, which occupied the first place in the Chinese market in the past, is classified as other with a 0% market share. According to BCI statistics, Oppo ranked first in China’s market share in January this year, overtaking Huawei with a market share in the early 20% range. Samsung Electronics is in the 9th place with 0.8%.
In the emerging Southeast Asian market, Samsung Electronics had to be satisfied with second place. In the third quarter of last year, Oppo occupied 20% of the total smartphone market share of four major Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Next, Samsung Electronics is in second place with 19%. According to Canalis, in the fourth quarter of last year, Samsung Electronics maintained the No. 1 market share in Vietnam by 24%, but sales volume decreased by nearly 20% from the same period last year.
As Samsung Electronics shakes in such a major market, the world’s No. 1 position is in jeopardy. According to IDC and Canalis, Samsung Electronics took the top spot on an annual basis last year, but it handed over to Apple in the fourth quarter.
This year, it is noteworthy whether Samsung Electronics will be able to take the No. 1 position with the Galaxy S21 and the expansion of the launch of mid-priced phones such as the Galaxy A12.
