[디지털투데이 백연식 기자] The SK Telecom taxi calling platform T Map Taxi app will be removed, and it will be integrated into Uber. While SK Telecom’s subsidiary Tmap Mobility and US vehicle sharing service’Uber’ launched a joint venture in April, the joint venture decided to combine vehicle calling services from each company, such as Uber Taxi, Uber Black, and Tmap Taxi. This is because Uber’s brand power is far higher than that of Tmap Taxi. The joint venture will be officially announced at the end of March as early as the plan to integrate and service with Uber App.
On the 10th, a senior official from SK Telecom said, “The Tmap Taxi app will disappear and it will be changed to Uber. Foreigners who have traveled to Korea will be able to receive taxi service with the same feeling as Uber by using the Uber app they originally had.
Tmap Mobility is a company founded by SK Telecom by dividing the mobility business unit in December last year. Tmap Mobility, a subsidiary of SK Telecom, currently provides services such as Tmap Taxi, Tmap Navigation, Tmap Parking, Tmap Public Transportation, and Tmap Map. In the future, it is planning to provide Tmap Auto, On-Demand (a business model that directly supplies goods or services that consumers want), subscription mobility business, and future mobility business.
In addition, Uber has decided to invest $100 million (approximately 1147 billion won) in a newly launched joint venture to take 51% of the stake, and invest 50 million dollars (approximately 57.3 billion won) in Tmap Mobility. Uber is a global vehicle sharing platform business operator. In Korea, it is providing vehicle calling services such as Uber Taxi, Uber Black, and General Taxi.
The joint venture was committed to the taxi calling business and decided to combine the vehicle calling services of each company, such as Uber Taxi, Uber Black, and Tmap Taxi. Accordingly, the Tmap Taxi will be eliminated and the service will be integrated into Uber, a global service. Instead, Tmap Mobility provides Korea’s No. 1 navigation service’Tmap Map’ to a joint venture.
Uber plans to expand its member taxis to 1,000 units by the first quarter of this year. In addition, it plans to provide specialized services such as’Uber Assist’ for passengers using wheelchairs,’Uber Baby’ for pregnant women and infants, and’Pet Taxi’ with pet-related equipment. Since the Fair Trade Commission approved the establishment of a joint venture between Uber and Tmap Mobility on the 10th, the plan described above is not expected to be disrupted.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom applies advertisements and paid subscription services to Tmap through its subsidiary Tmap Mobility. In the case of a subscription service, it plans to provide products with two to three times more benefits than the monthly fixed amount. In a private online conference call for analysts at domestic and overseas securities companies in October of last year, SK Telecom said, “T-map navigation services continue to be provided free of charge. However, when using navigation, advertisements are added.” “There may be consumer rejection of advertisements, but through user-based data analysis, we try to reduce user resistance by presenting advertisements that fit the mobility content and user context as much as possible. I do” he said. At that time, the conference call was attended by Jong-ho Lee (currently the CEO of Tmap Mobility), Jaehwan Lee (Currently Head of the Mobility Strategy Group of Tmap Mobility), Jeong-hwan Choi, head of IR2 group and head of IR1 group, and Jinjoong Kim, head of Value Growth Group.
