On the 9th, Kakao announced on the 9th that last year’s sales increased by 35% compared to the previous year to KRW 4,156 trillion and operating profit increased by 121% to KRW 455 billion. Last year was the first time that Kakao’s sales exceeded 4 trillion won. In particular, sales in the platform (advertising, commerce, mobility, fintech, etc.) sector (2.14 trillion won) surpassed the content (games, music, paid content, etc.) sector (2.108 billion won) for the first time. It is analyzed that the advertisement and commerce business based on Kakao Talk has settled. In particular, sales in new business areas such as mobility and Kakao Pay also increased 111% year-on-year to KRW 550.1 billion, showing rapid growth.

In a conference call held after the announcement of the results, Kakao Co-CEO Yeo Min-soo said, “The aggressive business expansion centered on Kakao Talk further strengthens the competitiveness of Kakao’s main body and increases business growth and shareholder value through IPOs of various Kakao communities. “This year, we will be able to see phrases such as’Shop through the store channel’,’Order through the KakaoTalk channel’ and’Rent through the KakaoTalk channel’ more frequently this year.” Kakao launched a rental/subscription service through the Kakao Talk channel in November last year, and is expanding its subscription service by releasing a data subscription service’Talk Drawer’ and an emoticon subscription service’Emoji Plus’ last month.

Kakao is confident in the possibility of success in various businesses targeting connected users based on Kakao Talk. In fact, as of December last year, KakaoTalk gift-giving users reached 21.73 million, as well as Talk Store (12.89 million) and Makers (606 million) users, which is a calculation that secured a maximum of 40 million lovers.
