The Kyodo News Agency reported on the 8th that US President Joe Biden announced on the 8th that whether the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games will be held, which has been postponed one year to this summer, “should be based on science.”

According to reports, President Biden said in a radio interview held the day before (U.S. local time) during the half-time of the U.S. Professional Football (NFL) championship match (Super Bowl), “Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide wanted to safely hold the game. “I’m working very hard,” he said. “I think whether it’s safe enough to hold the Olympics should be based on science.”

On that day, President Biden also said that it remains to be seen whether the United States will send a squad to the Tokyo Olympics, AFP news agency said.

This is the first time President Biden has made an official statement regarding the Tokyo Olympics.

On the 3rd, White House spokesman Jen Saki said at a regular press conference when asked about the US squad’s participation in the Olympics, “Nothing has changed with our plans.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Suga said that discussions on the Olympics were not made even in the telephone conference with President Biden on the 28th of last month.

The Tokyo Olympics, which are scheduled to open on July 23, after a one year delay in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), have become unclear again as the situation of Corona 19 in Japan has worsened.

In a telephone poll conducted by Kyodo News Agency against Japanese voters on the 6th and 7th, 82.3% of respondents said that the Olympics should be postponed or canceled.
