The final review committee will decide whether to finalize approval after reviewing expert opinions, efficacy, effects, and recommendations obtained through the verification advisory group and the Central Pharmacy Consultation.

Prior to this, at the meeting of the verification advisory group, there were many opinions that the vaccine should be administered to all age groups over the age of 18.

Afterwards, the Central Pharmacopoeia recommended that this product be approved by the age of 18 or older, but the vaccination for the elderly over the age of 65 should be carefully decided and discussed at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccination Specialist Committee.

In principle, vaccinations can be given to all age groups over 18 years of age, including those over 65, but it means that the vaccination committee should decide whether to actually vaccination to the elderly.

However, he explained that it is not a safety issue, but because there is insufficient evidence to confirm the effect of administering this vaccine to the elderly.

Currently, some European countries are pointing out that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is not effective for the elderly.

The European Commission (EU) has authorized the AstraZeneca vaccine to be administered to all age groups over the age of 18, as recommended by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Apart from these permits, Germany, France, and the Netherlands recommend that vaccinations to the elderly should be restricted.
