Reflecting corporate voices in digital trade negotiations...  Launched public-private TF

A joint public-private task force (T/F) was launched to actively reflect the voices of the industry on the complex trade issues resulting from the activation of digital trade.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Information and Communication, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held an inauguration meeting on the 8th at COEX, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, along with digital related organizations and industries.

According to the Ministry of Industry, discussions on digital trade norms are expected to begin in earnest with the acceleration of the digital transformation of the global economy due to Corona 19 and the launch of the Biden administration in the United States.

In preparation for this, T/F takes on the role of discovering normative elements that will reflect our profits based on the difficulties of digital companies entering overseas.

It is also responsible for analyzing the global competitiveness of digital companies, analyzing the expected effects of each industry according to the acceptance of trade standards (CPTPP, etc.), and discovering international cooperation projects that will support digital companies’ overseas expansion.

It is planned to collect corporate opinions and conduct impact analysis, as the competent ministries, related organizations, and industries will be the main focus of each industry sector such as cloud, data and artificial intelligence (AI), platform, and digital content.

At the meeting, the Ministry of Industry explained the trends in digital trade negotiations in Korea, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) e-commerce negotiations, the Korea-Singapore Digital Partnership Agreement (DPA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership Agreement (CPTPP), which are considering membership. .

Subsequently, we listened to the current status and related opinions of our digital companies’ trade response from relevant ministries and industries.

Participants at the conference decided to form small groups by industry sector for quick discussion.

The Ministry of Industry and related ministries plan to actively reflect the results of the discussion in the process of digital trade negotiations and policy establishment in the future.

Chung Hee-kwon, the Ministry of Science and ICT’s International Cooperation Officer, said, “We will actively communicate with the industry so that the digital agreement is an opportunity to promote Korean companies’ entry into emerging markets and strengthen domestic industrial capabilities.”

Lee Soo-myeong, director of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, emphasized, “We will establish a digital commerce strategy that can support the overseas advancement of K-contents and platforms such as Korean films, music, and games, to solidify our status as a cultural power.”

Hahm Jae-chun, secretary general of the Cloud Industry Association, said, “We will actively express opinions so that the necessary factors for solving the difficulties of the business and expanding market entry can be included in the trade norms.”
