Kim Jin-sook, who marched for 34 days saying he wanted to go back to the site, was a person who carried out a crane high altitude for 309 days at the Hanjin Heavy Industries shipyard in Busan in 2011. He is also a witness to the labor calculation who has been fighting for 36 years after being laid off while working as a female welder in the 1980s.

In January 2011, a 35-meter-tall crane at the Yeongdo Shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction in Busan began a occupation campaign against layoffs.
Kim Jin-sook, who was disciplined and dismissed from the company in 1986, continued his crane campaign for 309 days.

As more than 35,000 people from all over the country who supported Mr. Kim gathered at Yeongdo Shipyard, the company seemed to retreat.
The layoffs for 94 employees were withdrawn, but Kim was the only exception.
Kim Jin-sook, the first female welder at the shipyard, the center of the 1980s labor movement.
While criticizing the Korean Federation of Fisheries, he was taken to the office of the Grand Communist Office and tortured, and in 1986 he was disciplined and fired for absenteeism.
In 2009, the Democratization Movement Compensation Deliberation Committee recommended Kim’s reinstatement, but the management did not accept it.
Last year, the National Assembly Environment and Labor Committee came forward and announced a special resolution calling for reinstatement, but Mr. Kim was unable to return to work.
The management is not suggesting re-employment and payment of condolence money.
The reason is that paying salaries and severance pay with return money to a dismissed person can legally qualify as a mandate.

The Korea Development Bank, the main creditor of Hanjin Heavy Industries, is drawing a line saying that it is a matter to be decided by labor and management.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea also announced that the problem of Kim’s reinstatement should be resolved, but it is difficult to be optimistic about the end of the 36-year reinstatement struggle.
