It was found that about 70% of the citizens of Seoul wished to unify conservative opposition candidates two months before the 4·7 mayor by-election.

Among the supporters of the people’s strength, 90.7% of the opposition candidates agreed, and 78.9% of the conservatives. In particular, 85.1% of respondents who evaluated this election as’we need to empower the opposition party to judge the government and the ruling party’ reached 85.1%. The middle class (70.2%) and the shaman class (59.9%) were also favorable to the unification of opposition candidates. It seems that there will be pressure on the leadership of the people’s power holding the key to unification.

According to the results of the Seoul Mayor’s by-election poll conducted by the Hankook Ilbo and Korea Research (conducted on the 4th to 6th), 30.9% of respondents said that they “very agree” to the unification of opposition candidates such as the power of the people, the People’s Party, and independent. 35.9% said yes, and 66.8% said yes. 22.7% of the respondents combined’very disagree’ (8.7%) and’mostly disagree’ (14.0%). Don’t know and no response was 10.5%.

83.1% of the Nationalist Party’s supporters led by Ahn Chul-soo and 81.3% of Ahn’s supporters also answered that they agreed to the unification. On the other hand, among supporters of the Democratic Party, 55.8% of the conservative opposition candidates were relatively low. It means that the Democratic Party supporters see the’unification synergy’ of former Congressman Na Kyung-won, former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, and Representative Ahn as threatening. There was a greater demand for unification among former lawmaker supporters (86.8%) than the previous mayor (77.0%).

52% of votes for unification of passports

52.1% responded in favor of the unification of pan-passport candidates such as the Democratic Party and the Open Democratic Party. The objections were 34.3%, and the unknown and non-response were 13.6%, respectively.

73.4% of the Democratic Party supporters and 66.9% of the Open Democratic Party supported the unification of the pan-passport candidate. There was a clear temperature difference at 40.8% of the Justice Party supporters who favored the unification of pan-passport. However, in order to take responsibility for the sexual harassment case for the party’s representative, the Justice Party decided to nominate the Seoul and Busan mayors by-election and do not participate in the discussion on unification. Among the supporters of the power of the people, only 37.0% answered in favor of the unification of the pan-passport candidate.

◆How to poll

The poll was commissioned by the Hankook Ilbo to Korea Research and conducted on 800 men and women aged 18 and over living in Seoul, and surveyed for three days from February 4 to 6 by telephone interview. The mobile phone virtual (safe) number provided by SKT (8,041), KT (4,804) and LGU+ (3,216) was used as a 100% wireless telephone method. The response rate was 22.0% (a total of 3,640 people spoke and 800 responded). Based on the resident registered population in January 2021 announced by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, weights were assigned by region, sex, and age. The sample error is ±3.5% points with a 95% confidence level. For other details, please refer to the website of the Central Election Polls Review Committee (www.nesdc.go.kr).
