A $1.9 trillion (about 2,100 trillion won) stimulus plan prepared to overcome the economic downturn caused by the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) passed the US Senate plenary meeting. This stimulus plan, which was strongly promoted by US President Joe Biden before taking office, now leaves only the procedure for passing the House of Representatives in which the Democratic Party occupied the majority.

The Washington Post (WP) on the 5th (local time) said, “After the meeting from the previous day, around 5:30 am, the stimulus bill was passed with 51 votes in favor and 50 votes against.” In response, Senate Budget Chairman Bernie Sanders said, “We have come to the conclusion of a debate that has lasted more than 14 hours. I have a chance.”
Currently, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are tied with 50 Senate seats each. Initially, the Republican Party did not reach my conclusion, saying that the introduction of this massive stimulus plan would jeopardize fiscal soundness. However, Vice President Kamala Harris, the ex officio Senate Chairman, pushed for a casting boat. Some Republican senators met with President Biden on the 1st to propose an amendment of $600 billion (approximately 674 trillion won), which is a third of the level, but could not reach an agreement.
This support plan aims to provide a disaster support fund of 1,400 dollars (about 1.57 million won) per person with an annual income of 75,000 dollars or less. In addition, unemployment benefits of 400 dollars (about 450,000 won) per week are provided to the unemployed, and 35 billion dollars (about 393 trillion won) is provided to state and local governments to assist in coping with Corona 19.
The budget bill passed the Senate is subject to final approval by the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is 221 to 214, and the Democratic Party dominates the majority, and the passage is certain.
After the vote on that day, Democratic Party leader Charles Schumer said, “This is a huge first step,” and “the House of Representatives will do their best to get the bill passed.”
