There was a voice phishing scam worth 30 million won in the cryptocurrency exchange Upbit (operating company Dunamu), but investor losses were prevented with an abnormal transaction detection system (FDS) and quick response.
According to Upbit on the 4th, the incident occurred in November 2020. During real-time monitoring of customer transaction details, an abnormal pattern was found in the FDS. Upbit immediately restricted deposits and withdrawals from accounts where abnormal patterns were found.
It turned out that the owner of this account was a voice phishing criminal, who received 30 million won from the victim and deposited it into his upbit account. Upbit FDS was identified as an abnormal movement when a huge amount of funds was suddenly deposited into the account.
Afterwards, when the victim reported to the bank as a voice phishing and confirmed that the deposit was transferred to the Upbit account, the case proceeded quickly. An official of Upbit said, “When a voice phishing incident occurs, it is not easy to find the damage. In this case, we were able to prevent the damage by limiting the deposit and withdrawal of accounts suspected of being abnormal transactions.”
He explained why he was able to quickly detect abnormal deposits and withdrawals, “Upbit itself has an abnormal transaction pattern algorithm. For security reasons, I cannot tell you detailed standards. For example, there may be a deposit and withdrawal history pattern.” Explained.
Upbit refunded the victims of voice phishing 64 million won, more than twice the damage amount of 30 million won. An official of Upbit said, “It was confirmed that the perpetrator purchased bitcoin with 30 million won, which was first deposited from the victim. Recently, as the bitcoin price increased, 30 million won became 64 million won.” “The profit from voice phishing has increased. “Because it was not the profit of the bit, I returned all the money.”
An official of Upbit said, “Upbit is ready to prevent damage to investors through real-time monitoring and quick response,” and “I hope that acts that damage Upbit customers are eradicated.”
