(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jae-young Lee = The head of the clinical trial directly refuted the claim that the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine developed together by Oxford University in the UK and the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is useless for the elderly.
Oxford University professor Andrew Pollard, who led the clinical trial of the AstraZeneca vaccine, appeared on BBC Radio on the 3rd (local time) and revealed that their vaccine elicits an excellent immune response even in the elderly.
When asked for his views on French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks that the AstraZeneca vaccine “is nothing more than invalid for people over the age of 65,” he said, “(in clinical trials) the elderly showed a very similar immune response to younger adults. “The trend we identified (between clinical trial participants) was the same, and the degree was similar,” he said.
Professor Pollard added, “The point is that there is little data on the elderly, so people aren’t sure how much of the prevention effect they can have.”
British Health Minister Matt Hancock also refuted President Macron’s remarks, referring to a paper published by Oxford University the day before.
“We have to listen to scientists, but the science is very clear,” he said on BBC radio that day. “If you look at an Oxford paper, it’s clear that the AstraZeneca vaccine not only works, it works very well.”

Earlier, the University of Oxford published a thesis that analyzed the results of clinical trials conducted on 17,000 adults aged 18 to 55 in the UK, Brazil, and South Africa the night before.
According to the paper, AstraZeneca vaccine showed a protective effect from the 22nd day after the first vaccination, and maintained the effect at 76% level until 90 days, and the effect increased to 82.4% when the second vaccination was done 12 weeks later.
This is the result of supporting the UK government’s vaccination strategy, which increased the interval between the first and second vaccinations to a maximum of 12 weeks, Reuters explained.
Increasing the vaccination interval is a strategy to increase the number of first-time vaccinations in a situation where there is insufficient vaccine.
Recently, the AstraZeneca vaccine has been controversial that it is useless for the elderly.
Accordingly, Germany, France, and Belgium recommended that only those under the age of 65 should be vaccinated.
However, on the 29th of last month, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended conditional marketing approval for those over 18 years of age, and did not place any restrictions on the elderly.
In Korea, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s’Corona 19 Vaccine Safety and Effectiveness Verification Advisory Group’ recommended a’conditional approval’ of the AstraZeneca vaccine on the 1st of this month and presented an opinion that weighed on the side of vaccination for the elderly.
