[경제]Short selling resumed, opposite 60.4% vs. 24.0% in favor… a lot of active opposition in their 20s

Six out of ten citizens were found to be opposed to the resumption of short selling in the stock market.

There were more opposition than yes at all age groups, especially those in their twenties.

As controversy over whether to resume short selling in the stock market on March 16, the government’s concerns are deepening.

Amid strong demand from individual investors to extend the ban on short selling, a petition for a permanent ban on short selling was posted on the Blue House National Petition Bulletin.

On the other hand, the International Monetary Fund and the IMF recently ordered the Korean government to resume short selling.

Short selling is an investment method that borrows and sells stocks when stock prices are expected to fall, and then buys and repays stocks when the stock price goes down.

YTN commissioned Real Meter to ask for public opinion on the resumption of short selling.

60.4% of respondents said they opposed the resumption of short selling.

Six out of ten objected, 29.4% very opposed, and 31% somewhat opposed.

On the other hand, only 24% were in favor.

While there were many disagreements at all ages, dissent was high in the 70s and 20s.

In particular, those in their twenties had a higher ratio of’active opposition’ than other age groups.

By region, about 7 out of 10 residents in Daejeon, Sejong and Chungcheong were opposed, and the opposition ratio was higher than in other regions.

Regardless of the ideological orientation, opposition prevailed, and there were many strong negative responses to the resumption of short selling by conservatives.

They also replied that they oppose the resumption of short selling, regardless of the party they support.

This survey was conducted by wireless and wireline, among 500 men and women aged 18 and over nationwide, and the sample error is ±4.4% point at the 95% confidence level.
