The number of jobs in the semiconductor and electronics industry in the first half of this year is expected to increase compared to the previous year. However, except for these, the rest of the industry is expected to remain at the level of the previous year or decrease.

On the 31st, the Korea Employment Information Service and the Korea Institute for Industrial Technology Promotion (KIAT) announced that 8 major domestic manufacturing sectors, including machinery, shipbuilding, electronics, textiles, steel, semiconductors, automobiles, and displays, as well as 10 industries including construction, finance, and insurance, were conducted in 2021. In the first half of the year, it announced the forecast of job growth.

According to this, compared to the first half of last year, jobs in the electronics and semiconductor industries are expected to increase by more than 1.5% compared to last year, while jobs in the shipbuilding industry are expected to decrease by more than 1.5%. The remaining eight industries, including machinery, textiles, steel, automobiles, display, shipbuilding, and financial insurance, are expected to remain at the same level as last year.

In the case of semiconductors, it is expected to record double-digit growth compared to the previous year due to growing demand in the global market. Accordingly, domestic semiconductor exports are also expected to grow at around 10%, and are expected to record over $100 billion for the second time in history.

As the semiconductor market improves, facility investment is highly likely to increase, and employment in the first half of this year is expected to increase by 2.9% (about 4000 people) compared to the same period last year.

The electronics sector is also expected to grow slightly due to increased demand for electronic components (memory, systems, OLED panels, etc.) due to the recovery of the growth of electronics and IT and the expansion of 5G services. In addition, mobile phone demand is expected to recover rapidly due to the base effect from the spread of Corona 19 and the full-scale expansion of 5G smartphone replacement demand, and the computer market growth is also expected due to the expansion of non-face-to-face tasks and services.

Accordingly, the size of employment in this field in the first half of the year is expected to increase by 1.6% (about 11,000 people) compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, in the case of the only shipbuilding sector where’employment deterioration’ is expected, the number of orders is expected to increase this year. Seems to be.

The size of employment in the first half of this year is expected to decrease by 5.6% (about 6000 people) compared to the same period last year.

In the case of the automobile industry, it is expected to make up for the decrease in production in the previous year thanks to the introduction of various new cars by the finished car industry this year and the global market recovery following the stabilization of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, domestic automobile domestic demand is expected to fall short of last year’s level, which showed good performance. As production growth is limited, employment is expected to remain at the same level last year.

The display industry is also expected to see significant growth this year due to the increase in demand for non-face-to-face IT products and premium OLEDs, but it is expected to be offset by a decrease in production in the LCD field.
