Last year’s industrial production, hit by the Corona 19 crisis, declined for the first time in 20 years after statistics were written.

The consumption also declined the most in 17 years.

In particular, last month, when the distance distancing was greatly strengthened, industries such as food and lodging were seriously hit, leading to an increase in industrial production.

Industrial production last year decreased by 0.8% compared to 2019.

This is the first negative growth since the statistics were compiled in 2000.

Although automobile exports were sluggish, production in the mining industry, including manufacturing, rose 0.4% thanks to the semiconductor boom.

However, it was the contraction of the face-to-face service industry that brought industrial production down last year.

Financial, insurance, and real estate production increased amid the craze for stock and real estate investment, but the total service industry declined by 2.0% due to sluggish transportation and lodging and restaurants.

Looking at retail sales, which shows the consumption trend, sales of durable goods such as passenger cars increased by 10.9% last year, while semi-durable goods such as clothing decreased by 12.2% and non-durable goods such as cosmetics decreased by 0.4%.

It’s the biggest decline since retail sales fell 3.1% in 2003 during the card crisis.

Meanwhile, in December of last year, industrial production increased by 0.5%, consumption by 0.2%, and investment by 0.9%, respectively, showing a coincident increase.

As the service industry’s production declined 1.1% due to the strengthened distancing, the increase that had continued from September turned to a decline again.

Mining and industrial production increased from just 0.3% in November to 3.7% last month due to the strong semiconductor economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki and Minister of Strategy and Finance said, “It is very meaningful to continue the momentum of economic recovery last month despite the impact of domestic demand from the third proliferation.”
