Four years after the suspicion that a 4-year-old girl had developed hamburger disease’ (hemolytic uremic syndrome, HUS) after eating a McDonald’s hamburger, the patty maker’s executives and staff were convicted.

On the 26th, the Seoul Central District Court (Judge Young-chae Jang, who was solely criminal with 11 criminal cases) sentenced Song, the management director of a beef patty supplier, who was imprisoned for violating the Livestock Sanitation Control Act, to three years in prison and four years probation. The plant manager of the same company and the quality management team manager were also sentenced to probation.

A, who was 4 at the time, felt a stomachache 2-3 hours after eating a hamburger at McDonald’s in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do in September 2016.

Three days later, she was admitted to the intensive care unit and diagnosed with HUS. She was diagnosed with renal impairment grade 2 as a sequelae.

A’s parents sued McDonald’s Korea on charges of violating the Food Sanitation Act in July 2017, but the prosecutors who investigated the case said they lacked evidence to prove McDonald’s responsibility and dismissed it in February 2018.

Then, in January 2019, nine civic groups, including “political mothers,” accused McDonalds of Korea for violating the Food Sanitation Act and for negligence in work.

This ruling is accordingly.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s Korea announced on the 27th that it was reporting the company’s position on the 27th, fearing that misunderstandings would be created among customers, partners, and employees due to reports of false information regarding the trial of previous suppliers on the 26th.

The management said, “The patty that is the problem at the supplier is a separate case that is completely unrelated to the reported hemolytic uremic syndrome,” and said, “The case of the supplier has a different type from HUS-related patties, and the time of manufacture is completely unrelated. “I emphasized.

He added, “It is an issue that was reached in 2019 with the family who claimed the damage despite being prosecuted, and to provide support for the cost of treatment required for humanitarian reasons.”

“The former patty supplier is a company that no longer has a business relationship with us, and we stopped trading in 2017. As soon as we became aware of the related facts, we immediately took necessary measures, such as collection and disposal of the remaining stock. In the process of investigation by the judicial authorities, all of these facts have been clarified.” Ⓒ Safe Times
