Following last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education decided not to set mandatory volunteer hours for elementary, middle, and high schools this year. This is because volunteering itself has become difficult due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
On the 25th, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education informed each school of the’recommended time for student volunteer activities for the 2021 school year’. This is a content that eliminates the time for volunteer activities according to the individual plan, and allows the volunteer time to be decided according to the school plan. The voluntary service hours set by the Office of Education were eliminated, but only when safety was secured if students wished, they were allowed to receive school approval and volunteer.
In the meantime, the standard time recommended by the Office of Education for students to volunteer for a certain amount of time each year has been set. Elementary school 1st-3rd graders 5 hours, 4th-6th graders 10 hours or more, middle school 15 hours, high school 20 hours or more. However, in June of last year after the spread of Corona 19, these standards were removed and left to school autonomy.
An official from the Department of Education for Democratic Citizens of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said, “In a situation where social distancing is important due to the continued spread of Corona 19, the right to health of students is considered as a top priority, and the policy has been temporarily extended in the 2021 school year to minimize the risk of community infection.” Revealed.
Volunteer hours this year are not reflected in the calculation of the percentage of high standing seats. For middle school students, volunteer activities are also included in the evaluation when entering high school. A total of 300 points are scored for the total number of subject points and attendance, and volunteer activities account for 12 points (4 points per grade). If 15 hours were filled in the grade, a perfect score of 4 was given. However, since the standard time itself has been removed this year, all points will be processed.
