YTN’s report confirmed that the Moon Jae-in government, which declared that it would reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050, is pushing for a plan to halt the construction of the last thermal power plant currently under construction.

This is because a lot of money has already been paid out of the total construction cost of 5 trillion won, but it is better to stop it than to spend more money in the future.

Samcheok Coal-Fired Power Plant is under construction with a goal of completion by 2025 with a cost of KRW 4.9 trillion.

Currently, the facility process has progressed about 30%.

However, the Moon Jae-in administration has already declared zero carbon by 2050.

This means that even if a thermal power plant is completed, its meaning will fade.

For this reason, it is argued that the thermal power plant business must be completely abolished and promoted more boldly toward the environment.

Accordingly, the ruling Democratic Party is drafting a bill to provide money for power generation projects that are completely suspended according to government policy.

This means that there is a basis for paying land purchase costs, construction costs, and service costs, as well as support costs for related industries and regions, to private thermal power plants that are under construction or operating power plants like Samcheok.

The cost of this is being covered by receiving money according to the amount of power generated by the thermal power plants in operation, or using environmental funds.
