“The world’s shortage of 車semiconductors…domestic shock is also a matter of time”

As the supply and demand of semiconductors for vehicles around the world is disrupting, the domestic automakers and semiconductor industries have come up with countermeasures. Although there is still no major disruption to automobile production in Korea, it has decided to operate an emergency response system in preparation for a prolonged shortage of semiconductor supply.

On the 22nd, the Korea Automobile Industry Association held a discussion on the current status of semiconductor supply and demand with officials from the automobile industry and semiconductor industry by holding a’Semiconductor for Vehicles and Industry Promotion Plan’.

In preparation for the prolonged shortage of semiconductor supply and demand, △Connecting overseas semiconductor design companies (fabless) and domestic semiconductor manufacturers (foundries) △Strengthening cooperation between domestic fabless and domestic foundry companies △Expanding semiconductor production facilities for 8-inch vehicles △Expanding investment in the entire foundry industry, etc. Exchanged opinions.

Man-gi Chung, head of the Automobile Industry Association, said, “Amidst major automakers reducing automotive semiconductor orders in the aftermath of the spread of Corona 19, demand for the semiconductor industry is increasing due to 5G (5G) communications, and there is a temporary supply and demand disruption.” The two industry officials decided to come together regularly to monitor the supply and demand status and come up with a solution by holding a tech day.” According to the industry, the order period for automotive semiconductors, which normally takes 12 weeks, has been extended to 52 weeks, while operation is not smooth due to explosive demand in the foundry industry. As a result, overseas major automakers such as Volkswagen, Chrysler, and Toyota stopped operating their factories. Fortunately, it is reported that domestic companies have not yet suffered a shortage of supply enough to control production.

Chairman Chung explained, “The domestic automaker is also affected by the shortage of supply and demand for vehicle semiconductors,” he said. “It remains to be seen to what extent the situation will grow, but this is also a matter of time.”
