Fold your smartphone and focus on home appliances… Battlefield, AI for future food

[앵커]

Even though LG Electronics has been in the red for 23 consecutive quarters, it seems that it has stepped into the end of the smart phone business that it has not given up because it is an IoT hub such as robots, smart cars and smart homes.

It is read as a policy of focusing on the existing home appliance business and putting more power on the battlefield and AI as food for the future.

The reason that LG Electronics said it would review even the withdrawal of the smartphone business was due to the accumulated deficit.

The cumulative deficit for the 23rd consecutive quarter was 5 trillion won, and it has been holding back in taking care of the future business.

This reflects Chairman Kwang-mo Koo’s intention to resolute the deficit business, and the existing main business that used to be home appliances, TVs and mobile devices is expected to change to automobile parts instead of mobile.

LG Electronics recently decided to establish a joint venture in the powertrain sector with Magna, Canada, the world’s third largest auto parts maker.

In addition to LG Electronics, LG Energy Solutions, LG Innotek, and LG Display are transforming into electronic components such as batteries, vehicle displays, and vehicle communication and lighting parts.

Artificial intelligence is also considered the next food business.

On the 7th, we launched the’LG AI Research Institute’, a dedicated artificial intelligence organization with 16 affiliates including LG Electronics and LG Chem.

Hong-rak Lee, a world-renowned AI scholar and former Google Brain, a Google AI research organization, has been recruited.

In the future, we plan to speed up the establishment of additional mergers and acquisitions or joint ventures in fields such as battlefield, AI, and robots.

“Since core mobile technology will be internalized, there will be no setbacks in promoting future businesses such as the Internet of Things, home appliances, robots, and autonomous vehicles…”

It is reported that LG Electronics will announce its position on the sale of its smartphone business as early as next week.
