Hyundai Motor Company unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell power plant using Nexo.
Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 20th that it will hold a ceremony for the completion of the hydrogen fuel cell power generation system and begin pilot operation in earnest. The completion ceremony was held by a non-face-to-face video conference attended by Young-Jo Ji, President of Hyundai Motors Strategic Technology Division, Il-Joon Park, President of Korea East-West Power, Hyun-Tae Lee, CEO of Korea East-West Power, and Mayor Song Chul-ho of Ulsan City, where the hydrogen fuel cell power generation system is located.
Previously, Hyundai Motor Company, Korea East-West Power, and Deokyang discussed the establishment of a hydrogen fuel cell power generation system and implementation of a pilot project. The three companies are planning to pilot the hydrogen fuel cell power generation system for two years starting with the completion ceremony today.

The 1MW class hydrogen fuel cell power generation system developed by Hyundai Motor Company consists of two container modules capable of producing 500kW of electricity. Each container used Nexo’s hydrogen fuel cell for power generation.
This facility receives by-product hydrogen produced at the Ulsan Petrochemical Complex and produces 8000MWh of electricity per year. This is an amount that can supply power to about 2,200 households (based on monthly usage of 300 kWh), and it is possible to expand the supply to tens to hundreds of MW by increasing the number of containers in the future.
“I think this project has a very deep meaning in that we gain experience in operating facilities in the field with power generation companies through the establishment of partnerships,” said Hyundai Motor’s president Ji Young-jo. “We will commercialize fuel cells through successful pilot projects in the future. We will apply it to other industries and expand the hydrogen industry through economies of scale.
“When this pilot project is completed, the introduction of domestic facilities in the domestic large-capacity fuel cell market will expand, and the hydrogen economy will become more active through the localization of hydrogen fuel cell parts,” said Il-joon Park, president of Korea East-West Power. “To lead the green new deal in the future, We will do our best to develop technology and create jobs.” We are spurring the expansion of the business and hydrogen ecosystem.
