When localization is successful, contributing to the price decline of fuel cells and hydrogen vehicles for power generation

[에너지신문] Korea East-West Power has officially completed the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell demonstration facility based on hydrogen electric vehicle technology.

On the 20th, East-West Power Co., Ltd., together with Hyundai Motor Company and Deokyang, held a non-face-to-face completion ceremony for the 1MW-class polymer electrolyte hydrogen fuel cell system.

The polymer electrolyte hydrogen fuel cell is a method of generating electricity by bonding with oxygen ions through a polymer membrane capable of permeating hydrogen ions. In order to raise the fuel cell localization rate to 99% and develop the optimal operating technology, East-West Power signed a 2019 hydrogen fuel cell power generation pilot business agreement with Hyundai Motor Company and Deokyang, and installed a 1MW-class demonstration facility within the Ulsan Power Plant headquarters have.

The hydrogen fuel cell system completed this time was developed with a pure domestic technology using Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen electric vehicle technology. Deokyang supplies by-product hydrogen produced in local petrochemical complexes through a hydrogen pipe network.

Currently, most of the fuel cells for power generation in Korea are based on overseas original technology such as the United States, so the localization rate is low and parts replacement and maintenance costs are high. If localization is successful, it is expected to contribute to lowering the price of fuel cells for power generation and hydrogen cars through mass production of hydrogen fuel cells.

In particular, it is expected to be able to improve the fluctuations in power generation due to the expansion of renewable energy in the future as it has excellent load fluctuation ability compared to foreign products.

From the completion of this demonstration facility, East-West Power plans to perform various performance tests in connection with the transmission network for about two years, and complete localization by 2022.

President Park Il-joon of East-West Power said, “When this demonstration project is completed, the introduction of domestic facilities in the domestic large-capacity fuel cell market will expand and the hydrogen economy will be more active.” I said.
