At a briefing on the 19th, Minister of Small and Medium Venture Business Park Young-sun is explaining a syringe product for the Corona 19 vaccine developed and mass-produced by Poonglim Pharmatech with the help of Samsung Electronics. Mid-term offer
With the help of Samsung Electronics, a Korean small and medium-sized company developed a syringe for the Corona 19 vaccine that drastically reduced the amount of remaining injections, and will begin mass production of 10 million units per month from next month. In particular, with a regular syringe, you can only inject up to 5 doses per bottle of the Corona 19 vaccine, but this syringe can increase the production of the vaccine by 20% because it is possible up to 6 doses.
The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 19th that with the help of Samsung Electronics, Poonglim Pharmatech, a medical device manufacturer, has established a smart factory mass production system capable of producing more than 10 million syringes for Corona 19 vaccines with LDS technology applied per month. Founded in 1999, Poonglim Pharmatech is a company that manufactures and sells syringes, needles, and equipment for surgical procedures, with annual sales of 30 billion won.
In conventional syringes, even after the entire amount of injection solution is injected, a part of the chemical solution remains between the microscopic spaces between the gaps in the syringe. However, the syringe developed by the company with the help of Samsung Electronics is designed to minimize this space. The loss of the remaining injection volume per injection can be reduced from 80 µl (microliter, 1 µl = 1 in 1 million ℓ) to 4 µl, the level of 1/20th. There is also a’safety guard’ device in front of the needle, which prevents contact between contaminated needles and people after use. These achievements are significant in that they were achieved in just one month through Samsung Electronics and the mid-term and mid-sized enterprises win-win smart factory construction support project.

Ministry of SMEs and Startups
Samsung Electronics started the first countermeasures meeting with the company on the construction of a smart factory on the 24th of last month, Christmas Eve, with more than 30 experts. In addition, during the end of the year and the beginning of the year, we mobilized factories in Gumi and Gwangju to complete the production of prototype molds and prototypes in a week. Samsung Electronics doubled the productivity of syringe injection by utilizing ultra-precision mold and injection technology, and supported the production of automatic syringe assembly facilities. The company’s production capacity has increased 2.5 times from 4 million units per month to more than 10 million units.
In addition, Samsung Electronics connected packaging materials companies to ensure that there is no disruption in box supply and demand, and established a data management system at the manufacturing site through tablet devices. All processes (order, order, injection, assembly, packaging, quality inspection, shipment, etc.) that were managed by hand can be tracked and managed through barcodes. The Ministry of SMEs and Entrepreneurs provided quick support in terms of administration and funding through a fast track procedure for quarantine supplies and Hana Bank’s dedicated smart factory loan program.
Currently, the company has obtained a license for domestic use of the vaccine syringe on the 15th, and exports are expected to become visible in the near future. According to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, following Poonglim Pharmatech, six to seven syringe manufacturers such as Korean vaccine and Sungshim Medical are also considering building smart factories with Samsung Electronics. Mid-term Minister Park Young-seon, who presented a syringe in person at the briefing on the day, explained that it is a representative success model of public-private partnership sponsored by the government by combining the smart manufacturing know-how of large companies with global network capabilities.
