Following President Moon Jae-in, the Democratic Party leadership also drew a line in the debate on selective or universal payments, saying that now is the time to focus on quarantine and not to discuss the 4th disaster subsidy payment.

However, Gyeonggi Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myeong, who is promoting the basic disaster income in Gyeonggi Province, interpreted it differently as President Moon’s empowerment.

Ahead of President Moon Jae-in’s New Year’s press conference, the top members of the Democratic Party also held a closed meeting on disaster subsidies.

This is because Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myeong, who had disagreeed with the party by emphasizing support for the whole people, has officially requested that this part be resolved.

In this discussion, the party leadership, including CEO Nak-yeon Lee, reaffirmed the party’s basic principles regarding disaster subsidies.

Now is the time to expand financing and, depending on your needs, you can make either selective or universal payments, but right now is the time to focus on quarantine.

Although he did not provide a direct answer, it seems that he actually expressed objection to the Governor’s discussion of supporting the national disaster support fund.

This is in line with President Moon Jae-in’s announcement at a press conference that the next support should be discussed while watching the quarantine situation.

On the other hand, Governor Lee Jae-myeong mentioned the president’s press conference on his social media outlets, and emphasized that he would work on economic quarantine as long as Gyeonggi Province’s financial capabilities allow it.

It showed the intention to proceed with the disaster basic income project in Gyeonggi-do as it is, and presented different interpretations of the President’s remarks.

A Gyeonggi-do official said he believes that he will actively play a role in the party, saying he believes that the president’s words should be actively done at the local level whenever necessary.

In this regard, Governor Lee plans to speed up the promotion of basic disaster income at the Gyeonggi-do level, worth 1.4 trillion won, based on the party’s position that will be communicated soon.

At the same press conference by President Moon, the current Democratic Party leadership and Governor Lee Jae-myung made different interpretations.

Rather than arguing which one is right in the disaster subsidies discussion, it once again showed the power landscape within the ruling party.
